Flow diagnostics on a microscale

PIV and LIF measurements in microfluidics applications generate similar raw images as larger scale applications, so the same analysis methods can be applied. Masking and dynamic masking are often important because the flows are in narrow channels and the walls are typically in the images, so the wall reflection must be masked out.

Some applications, such as droplet generation are two-phase flows. Dynamic masking with phase boundary detection is very useful to analyse the flow in each phase separately. Our software platform DynamicStudio includes tools for static and dynamic masking, ideal for such applications.

Mixing of liquids in microchannels is a challenge due to the typically very low Reynolds number. Micro PIV and Micro LIF are very useful tools for studying micromixing applications.
