Aerospace NDT

Control surfaces, satellite solar arrays, rotor blades, nacelles, cowlings, fairings, radomes, coatings and felt-metal seals are all types of aerospace components that can be inspected using Laser Shearography NDT.

Typical defects that can be found using Laser Shearography in sandwich and honeycomb constructions include: disbonds, cracked core/s, crushed core/s, corrosion with skin-to-core disbonding and node-bond-splits. These types of defects can be inspected within seconds achieving inspection rates of multiple m2/min making it one of the best techniques for both effectiveness and efficiency.

A Laser Shearography inspection of an aircraft control surface with aluminium honeycomb construction. The phase map has 6 indications of; cracked core/s, crushed core/s, corrosion with skin-to-core disbonding and node-bond-splits. The inspection was performed using vacuum excitation and required only 5 seconds yielding an inspection rate of 1.4 m²/min.
