Burst Spectrum Analyzer

The Burst Spectrum Analyzer (BSA) is a fast and powerful all-in-one processor for LDA and PDA systems. Using the latest developments in signal processing technology, this processor offers the flow measurement and particle sizing community a breakthrough in both top signal input frequency and bandwidth range allowing measurements in the most difficult application regimes. The BSA is powerful, fast, and better than ever featuring:

  • Robust signal processing using multi-bit FFT for superior accuracy
  • Highest velocity measurement capability thanks to an input frequency of up to 250 MHz
  • Widest velocity range measurements with bandwidths of up to 200 MHz
  • Easy setup/connection with only few cables due to new built-in detection unit
  • Convenient choices for PC connections including LAN, USB or Wi-Fi
  • On-line, real-time monitoring of Doppler bursts, spectra, data rate, and validation
  • Automatic over-current protection prevents damage to photomultipliers (PMs)
  • Completely automatic PDA phase calibration whenever needed

Powerful & fast

The BSA comes in two series: The BSA (Flow) F-series for LDA systems – and the BSA (Particle) P-series for PDA solutions. We offer three BSA performance levels:
BSA F/P 100: velocity range up to ~50 m/s at an attractive price
BSA F/P 600: general purpose for most applications.
BSA F/P 850: top performance for the most demanding high velocity applications.

All-in-one concept

The processor is rugged and compact with an integrated processor and detection unit which includes frequency shifting, a photo detection system, advanced synchronization options, and an analog input option. This all-in-one concept simplifies the system setup and minimizes cable connections. For LDA or PDA systems with external PMs, the new BSA can be configured without the internal detection unit.

Multiple and comprehensive validation schemes

Several validation processes can be performed by the processor in real-time to guarantee the highest measurement quality. Each burst is validated by its signal-to-noise ratio so only qualified bursts will be processed for velocity and particle size; in addition, coincidence validation can be performed for 2D or 3D velocity measurement to ensure that all velocity components measured are from the same particle.

For PDA measurement, a spherical validation is performed by analyzing the phase difference from additional photo detectors to reject non-spherical particles. Additionally, intensity validation can be carried out based on an analysis of the signal intensity of an acquired burst compared with the measured size from it to minimize the influence from trajectory effect or slit effect.

Easily Configurable

The BSA is available in 1D, 2D, or 3D versions. Upgrades for more velocity channels, performance enhancement (100 to 600 series 600 to 850 series) and from LDA to PDA are quickly implemented. As your research demands change, you can easily adapt the processor accordingly.
