DynamicStudio 7.4 introduces a revamped ShadowSizer Add-On with two new methods: Adaptive Shadow Tracking and Shadow Size Calibration. Other new features are reconstruction from mPOD data as well as new demo datasets.

The DynamicStudio Shadow Sizing add-on has been updated with advanced new algorithms for improved accuracy and precision of the size calibration and velocity of particles.

With special focus on reducing measurement bias, the Shadow Size Calibration method builds size and depth-of-field calibration functions based on a multi-frequency calibration target. The combination of these two results in  accurate size and absolute depth location calculations, even from extremely out-of-focus particles.

The new Adaptive Shadow Tracking method has a simple user interface (UI) allowing for interaction with the particle detection with minimal user input, providing visual feedback to tweak the optimal parameters. Adaptive thresholding and adaptive particle tracking remove many user inputs required for particle detection, minimizing the most common sources of uncertainty in particle characterization using shadow imaging, even in the most difficult experimental conditions. Updated multiscale Proper Orthogonal Decomposition (mPOD) with reconstruction

Comparison graph for Shadow Sizing
Comparison of the mPOD (left column) and classical POD (right coloumn) of mode 3 from a jet flow. On the chronos of the POD one can see a high frequency noise, which is mostly created by camera vibrations, the mPOD with it´s freely definable filterbands can separate the camera shake from the true data

The mPOD analysis method is the result of a collaboration with the von Karman Institute, Belgium (VKI). It was published in Measurement Science and Technology and won the publication’s Outstanding Paper Award for 2020 in the field of Fluid Mechanics. In this version of DynamicStudio we are extending its functionality to be able to compute reconstruction from the computed modes. This enables you remove unwanted features, such as for instance camera vibrations from your PIV measurements. How to do this is shown in our new demo database. Read more

New and updated demo databases

The demo databases with sample data, and their explanations have been updated for PIV where the mPOD was used to reduce camera vibrations from the measurements, making use of the new mPOD reconstruction.
Additionally, we have added demo data for the new Adaptive Shadow method, the Background Oriented Schlieren (BOS) technique, Stereo PIV and the ActiveTarget for spatial camera calibrations, also explaining the Active Image Stitching.
