Underwater Propeller Motion Analysis Test using Istra4D V4.12

In this application video, a 3-cam (5 Mpx) FlexDIC system is being used to measure the
displacement of propeller blades whilst the propeller is in rotation, underwater.
Using the new Istra4D V4.12 software, multiple new features are presented here in this application
video, including the; “Camera (Position) Name Overlay”, “Refractive Index Volume (Calibration)
Method (RIVM)”, and “Grid Spacing Selection Assistance”.
In the test measurement setup, users can now (as of Istra4D V4.12) toggle the camera (position)
name to be overlayed in the information display. This helps users to identify which camera is where,
particularly useful when multiple cameras are being used. Users can now name cameras “left”,
“middle”, “right”, “front-left”, “back-right”, etc.
In Istra4D V4.12, the Refractive Index Volume (Calibration) Method (RIVM) is now available that
extends the standard pinhole camera model to account for refraction effects that occur when light
rays pass through interfaces between media with different refractive indices (e.g., air → glass → water).
The classical pinhole camera model ignores these geometric distortional effects and leads to inaccurate
measurement results.
In the correlation evaluation, another new feature in Istra4D V4.12 is presented that assists users in the
selection of the grid spacing/step size. The grid spacing selection assistance calculates the spacing
according to a fraction of the chosen facet size. Recommended grid spacing sizes are dependent on DIC
application for local strain (a minimum of 1/2 ) and for global deformation (a maximum of 2/3).
In the graphical visualization, a 2D-overlay of the X- and Y- displacements (mm) can be seen. Four point
gauges are placed on one blade, and the total displacement (mm) for each point is plotted on a temporal
plot. After one revolution it can be seen that the total displacements for each of the points at the same
phase interval is identical. Finally, a 3D-visualization of the propeller blade model can be seen.
