Tensile test of an Aluminum Coupon using a 3-cam FlexDIC in Istra4D V4.11

In this application video, a 3-cam (5 Mpx) FlexDIC system is being used to measure the displacement length
change and peak engineering strain of a aluminum coupon in a tensile test before fracture.

The FlexDIC system is used with a materials testing machine whereby the load (lbf) and extension (in) are

imported into the visualization following the materials test. During the correlation evaluation, the center

camera is selected as the reference for the grid parameterization, since this has a perpendicular view of
the test object, as such the alignment of the facets/subset is in rectangular shape without distortion.
Using this setup, known as the Central Reference Camera Perspective (CRCP), the measurement accuracy
is improved by 30% compared to a two camera setup.

In the graphical visualization, a 2D-overlay visualization of the engineering principal (major) strain 1 can
be seen. Strain concentrations can be seen at the center of the specimen on a diagonal angle, which
eventually show where the sample fractures. Using a virtual line gauge, the path length change
displacement and engineering path line strain can be plotted in a temporal plot. The maximum extension
of the coupon  0.019 in and maximum load of 377 lbf is recorded at the point of failure. The sample
elongated by nearly 27 mm with ca. 228 mstrain.
