In this application video, an aluminum coupon (cut-out) is being cyclically loaded (in tension) in a fatigue test
(at 2.9 Hz) and measured using the ThermoESA sensor. Using thermoelastic stress analysis (TSA), a live in-situ
measurement of the coupons’ thermoelastic response can be seen on the surface (stress visualization). Using
cross-correlation, the load (signal) and temperature can be isolated, which results in lower noise with successive
block-series acquisition. Calibration of the thermoelastic response to strain can be performed using known strain
values, for example from a Digital Image Correlation (DIC) system, for which the major (e1) and minor (e2) strains
= calibrated bulk strain. The bulk strain visualization indicates strain concentrations of tension (purple) at the wing
tips and compression (yellow) below the tail. A maximum strain of 440 ustrain can be measured from the test.
