Stress visualization of an Aluminum Coupon (Cut-of) of a Wind Power Mill in a Fatigue Test

In this application video, an aluminum coupon (cut-out) of a wind power mill is being cyclically loaded
(in tension) in a fatigue test (at 3.5 Hz) and measured using the ThermoESA sensor. The ThermoESA has
an in-built RGB camera which allows the live colour to be overlayed onto the thermoelastic stress
response images. Using thermoelastic stress analysis (TSA), a live in-situ measurement of the coupons’
thermoelastic response can be seen on the surface (stress visualization). Using cross-correlation, the load
(signal) and temperature can be isolated, which results in lower noise with successive block-series
acquisition. Calibration of the thermoelastic response to stress can be performed using known stress
values, for example from an FEA-model. The stress visualization indicates stress concentrations of tension
(purple) at the rotor blade tips and compression (yellow) at the rotor blade root. A maximum stress of 287
MPa can be measured from the test.
