Aircraft manufacturers are especially interested in reducing aircraft drag in order to reduce fuel consumption and optimize engine performance. This enables the aircraft to perform a steeper take-off and achieve a lower landing speed, as well as reducing air turbulence on the runway created during take-off and landing.
To gain more knowledge in these areas, the aerospace industry and research institutes extensively investigate the laminarization of the aircraft’s boundary layers. Particularly interesting in this regard are parts of the aircraft where different components are joined together, such as wing/engine configurations.
The Center of Applied Space Technology and Microgravity (ZARM) has successfully conducted LDA measurements in co-operation with DASA Airbus.
