Mercury Marine, the leading provider of advanced, environmentally friendly outboard motors, contacted Dantec Dynamics to see if Dantec’s advanced full-field strain and stress measurement equipment could provide additional insight into the source and mechanics of stress risers in prototype engine parts.
These stress risers often occur in places where it is difficult or impossible to use conventional transducers, or may be caused by surface defects that would be removed in the course of applying conventional transducers such as strain gages. Even more difficult to evaluate and important to acknowledge, they can be very localized and impossible to resolve with the traditional standard techniques.
Mercury Marine found just such a problem in a prototype cast aluminium part. During high cycle fatigue tests, cracks formed in the part, and its source could not be completely understood using their traditional tools.
