Control of fibre orientation plays a key role in the constant drive for improved paper and board quality. Current methods for determining fibre orientation in paper and board rely on measurements made on the finished sheet.
This method, however, gives insufficient information on the cross flows in the wet end (also known as jet misalignment), which is the single most important parameter affecting fibre orientation. Nor can this method determine the actual jet to wire speed ratio, which has a major effect on the fibre orientation angle.
The FiberExplore system has been developed to overcome these shortcomings, providing the papermaker with accurate information on both jet misalignment and jet to wire speed ratio, either at a single point or as a fibre orientation profile measured in the wet end. The information enables the papermaker to reduce twist/curl and optimise the strength characteristics of the paper or board.

On-line wet end control with FiberExplore
FiberExplore is a complete system solution for on-line fibre orientation control on a paper or board machine. The system measures the flow direction profile of the jet as it is delivered onto the forming table, which is directly related to the fibre orientation in the finished sheet.
Adjustments made to any headbox controls affecting either the cross flow or the jet speed itself will immediately be displayed on the operator screen in the machine control room. This enables the machine operator to optimise the stock flow characteristic for a given paper grade, independently of any test results from the laboratory.
Furthermore, as the measurements are carried out online, the FiberExplore system is the ideal tool for quickly achieving optimal and consistent product quality after a grade change or following machine start up.
The essential tools for optimising the stock flow are the slice lip opening profile, the edge valves, the recirculation valve and the jet to wire speed ratio. Once the headbox controls have been set optimally in relation to the stock flow, the system can be set up for continuous scanning, displaying an on-line fibre orientation profile.
This enables the machine operator to monitor possible drifts in the headbox controls, thus ensuring consistent product quality throughout the entire production run.
