PIV for Microfluidics

Measuring microfluidics is fundamentally similar to classical PIV, with just a few essential differences of technique.

Microfluidics PIV is a new and innovative technique for quantifying flows in microstructures, MEMS, biomedical flows, Lab-on-a-chip etc.

In standard PIV there is a light sheet which defines the measurement plane, and which is imaged onto a camera.

When measuring microfluidics, volume illumination is used because of the limited physical space around the microscopic flow.

The numerical aperture of the microscope objective defines the measurement plane. This is shown in the illustration below.

Dantec Dynamics offers microfluidics measurements in a number of fields and applications, ranging from measurements in blood to measurements in mixing devices.

Results of a PIV measurement in a biochemical mixing device. Resulting vectors are plotted over the structure, which has a depth of only 100 micrometers. The measurement was performed with the Microelectronic Center at the Technical University of Denmark.
